ROMANCE and BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS - CHANTICLEER GARDENWayne, Pennsylvania, United States
Chanticleer's claim-to-fame is all about the gardens. Once called the 'most romantic,
imaginative, and exciting public garden in America', Chanticleer's 47 acres and over 5000 plants are bursting with energy and glorious color. My favourite place for ultimate serenity is The Pond Garden - a hub of spring-time energy with Green Herons, frogs, damsel flies and wrens on a mission to find food or mate. Ease yourself into a well placed garden chair and while away an hour of peaceful fascination as pond life goes about its daily business. Make sure a visit to this lively garden includes a viewing of the riotous color when 'iris of a dangerous hue fight with the lipstick red flowers of Weigela.' In keeping with this amusing description of floral demeanor, the name Chanticleer has some additional claim-to-fame and will forever bear the mark of a droll and humorous founder. Adolph Rosengarten Sr. named the garden after the estate "Chanticlere" in the 1855 novel The Newcomes. Chanticlere was "mortgaged up to the very castle windows" but was "still the show of the county." A passionate garden enthusiast, Mr. Rosengarten Jr. left his estate for the enjoyment and education of the public in 1990. With the creative enthusiasm of 7 full-time horticulturalists and additional gardeners and groundskeepers, Chanticleer has blossomed into a beauty of a place to immerse yourself in all things gardening. |
