That's right ladies - I said it - I booked a day of total relaxation and I ended up circuit training! I'll tell you my story, but beware, if you read this, you too will somehow end up at a spa, and you'll wish you were circuit-training too!
It started like this - an early morning rise, myself and my good friend Karen, buckets of coffee, and a long drive north for a much-needed day of R'nR. Award-winning Scandinave Spa Blue Mountain was an easy choice - it ties for top-spot on both our bucket lists, and got some great vibes from a total stranger - thanks 'ShellShockPeach' on Tripadvisor - 'Perfect Day in Paradise' is exactly what we were looking for!
Scandinave Spa sits in a clearing on the (currently) snowy slopes of Ontario's Blue Mountains. Twenty-five acres of towering pines frame a cluster of cottage-style timber buildings, and timber buildings frame a small piece of paradise with more luxury and relaxation per square meter than just about anywhere. Picture pools of steaming sapphire water, more pools of frigid - and totally invigorating - arctic aqua, cedar-scented firepits, Nordic waterfalls, Finnish, and infra-red saunas, solariums, hammocks ...
So you get the idea - these two over-worked women are here to RELAX!
I'm wrapped like a polar bear in a cosy white robe. And it strikes me - this standard spa-guest uniform is genius! I look at Karen's blissful smile and her spa uniform, and she looks at mine and our outfits say it all: 'No way are we here to do work!'.
Except that Mallory tells us we're here to do circuits. Nooooo - I did circuits yesterday! And after a round of sit-ups and push-ups and (attempted) chin-ups and all that sweating yesterday I darn well deserve a round of sitting in hottubs today!
Oblivious to the potential stress brought on by the word 'circuits', Mallory goes on to explain. Spa-guest uniforms are legit. Blissful smiles can stay on our faces. And circuits are the spa-tech term for relaxing in one blissful steamy bubbling hottub, strolling to the the Cold Plunge for an invigorating - but not mandatory - plunge. Then more strolling, more steamy relaxing, more non-mandatory cold-plunging - lather-rinse-repeat!
Every spa guest must breathe a sigh of relief when they hear 'Cold Plunge' prefixed with 'not mandatory'. But check out what this is all about and you'll see why spa day at Scandinave should definitely include channeling a polar bear and taking the plunge.
Circuit starts with a body warming soak - all that perspiring reduces blood pressure, cleanses the skin and releases toxins. Now take that cold plunge, or be one of the few and the brave and take a roll in the snow. Your pores will close, locking in remaining moisture. And finally - you've definitely earned it - put your feet up, close your eyes, channel a yogi and meditate. Hammocks, firepits, solariums and all that nature make this step irresistible on your first round. On a third round though, this step comes with total bliss.
Trust me - I know.
After a morning of soaking and plunging and meditating, our last round stopped at the warmest hottub. Karen and I had found Scandinave's spa-voice-or-silence rule a challenge at first, but by this round we both sank silently in the warm bubbles. Steam curled toward the sky. Cedar essence infused the misty air. My skin tingled but my body had melted. And the perfect and unexpected accompaniment to this 'Perfect Day in Paradise' - the wind was literally howling in the trees above me. Totally in the moment, there was nothing but warm bubbles and that howling wind. Total bliss!
