A full week in Iceland turned out to be a full week of adventure for myself and my teens. By day we traversed raging mountain rivers in the highlands, we pet every Icelandic horse on our route, ate fermented shark, and braved pelting rain and howling winds at The Blue Lagoon.
Each day has added another chapter to our Iceland adventure story. But now us weary jet-lagged travelers are looking for a place to lay our heads. We'd like to continue that adventure theme, but as the mum, I'm also happy to embrace a little luxury.
And that's were Galaxy Pod Hostel comes into our holiday plans.
With a long night of deep sleep top of mind, Galaxy Pods' space-ship style sleeping pods are about as close to adventure as you can get. Our hostel room was like no hostel I'd ever seen - eight stark-white rectangular 'igloos' were double-stacked floor to ceiling. And whether you're embracing the space-ship or igloo theme, the blue glow highlighting your bed totally enhances the vibe.
Mums luxury was well taken care of too. Picture memory-foam mattresses, shelf and charging station, and a room with a shared view of some of those beautiful Icelandic mountains. With the front blind drawn each pod was it's own fully-enclosed mini-room - dark, quiet, and cosy-as-heck.
Galaxy Pod Hostel is close to downtown Reykjavik and walking distance to a whole lot of funky shops, restaurants, a grocery store and cool night spots, There's an on-site kitchen, free wi-fi, big TV and movie room. Us three weary travelers appreciated - and made the most of - easy-to-reach local diversions, and great on-site amenities.
Well-fed and a little rested from a touristy day, myself, Adam, and Anika made like backpackers and hung out til the late hours playing cards and chatting up a storm. Teen bed-times were long forgotten. Even jet-lag went out the window. In one evening on an island in the North Atlantic ocean my family heard voices from around the world and shared a common love of life's adventures.
The midnight sun never goes down, but finally we did. My cosy pod was the quietest and coziest sleep of the week. And judging by the quick good-nights, and even quicker silence in the room, my two teens found sleep in moments.
