WILD TIME AT GREAT WOLF LODGE
Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada
My daughter loves animals. And my generally quiet son can’t get enough of blazing down a waterslide ‘woo-hooing’ at the top of his lungs. I can’t think of anywhere that packages both those kid passions better than The Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
We stepped in the door of Wolf Lodge’s over-sized log-cabin style building and were transported to a themed wilderness retreat with incredible attention to detail. Walls are cliffs with anamatronic animals perched on ledges. A mother wolf high on the cliff howls, and wolf pups follow suit. A talking moose and bear hang out on a rocky outcrop, greeting visitors, and telling jokes. And a large blazing fire warms bundled travelers and swim-suit clad kids. The wilderness theme continued in our room where the kids were excited to see they’d be sleeping in their own cave themed Wolf Den with bunk bed. We knew little time would be spent here though as unpacking was limited to a flurry of discarded clothes, wiggling into swim gear and racing out the door. We entered the waterpark and were greeted with a warm breeze and 81,000 square feet of choices for all ages. Huge slides loomed overhead - some too scary for mum but just great for my water-loving kids, and daredevil husband. The ‘Niagara Rapids Run’ water roller coaster was enjoyed and repeated many times. Later the whole family had a blast as the waves splashed over us in‘Rainbow Lake’. And a leisurely trip down the lazy river was anything but lazy as kids tried unsuccessfully to paddle against the current. After a long day of sliding and swimming, my exhausted family wandered through the lobby. We didn’t expect to make it through an evenings entertainment, but came across the ideal close to our day. Pajama-clad children, already yawning after a hectic day of fun, were gathering round the tree for a bedtime story. They were treated to a rowdy rendition of Robert Munsch’s ‘Mortimer’. Children were encouraged to join in the chorus ‘Mortimer - BE QUIET!’. Next, the well-intentioned story-teller told a ‘sleep story'. It ended with sleepy eyes from most of the gathered crowd and this exhausted family made our way to our own private Wolf Den after a long hard day of fun. |
