BED and BREAKFAST - PLANTATION STYLEDarrow, Louisiana, United States
The Mississippi River meanders west out of New Orleans leaving Mardi Gras, street-sanctioned drinking and smoky all-night jazz clubs far behind. River Road hugs the shore through mile upon mile of crocodile-infested bayous. A tourist could only be hopelessly lost in this wilderness.
Unless of course, that wandering tourist is on a mission to enjoy fantastic food, to see beautiful gardens, or to experience what Lonely Planet calls the "best history tour in the United States". If your mission also includes luxury and a generous helping of Southern hospitality, historic Houmas House Plantation is the perfect place to lay your head. Guest cottages are nestled amongst the oaks and flowers. Columns mirror the grand features of the Sugar Baron's home in miniature. And lavish old world style furnishings meet modern comfort with wi-fi and ensuite Keurigs. Latil's Landing Restaurant showcases owner Kevin Kelly's art collection in the 230 year old main house. Try Chef Jeremy Langlois' deliciously original "Chopped Salad" featuring blue crab and ice cream cone crumble matched with boutique wine from Houmas' extensive cellar. And follow your nose in the morning - warmed cane syrup and fresh baked bread will lead you to famous New Orleans Bananas Foster at the Carriage House - as decadent and delicious as it looks! The 'bones' of Houmas' 38 acre garden are stunning - two garconierres where sons of the wealthy were housed, ancient oaks, magnolias, and mossy walls of Louisiana brick. The rest is up to artist, poet, and Houmas House head gardener Craig Black who fills the space with native Louisiana plants. But while I'm a total plant-lover, my favourite garden feature was the gaggle of flying pigs - fat, rusted, soaring with bewildered grins - and the backdrop of a grand estate home behind. After a long day of touristy pursuits it's time for serenity. Settle in a rocking chair on the porch with your Mint Julip to watch the suns glow fade - fireflys will soon be out to light the sky. Enjoy some Southern hospitality. And stay awhile! Website: http://www.houmashouse.com/ |
