Toronto ComicCon 2017 has finally arrived. And after weeks of speculation I at last know which superhero will be attending the event with me.
Captain America - a.ka. my thirteen-year-old daughter Anika - takes fangirl to a whole new level. Check out this dedication - Anika's favourite movie genre? Marvel. Favourite debate topic? Marvel vs. DC. And what does Anika's closet contain? Marvel ... and more Marvel.
Of course Toronto ComicCon tops Anika's list of favourite Toronto events even before we go. Fifteen thousand square feet of Metro Toronto Convention Center features over four hundred exhibitors and welcomes over twenty-five thousand visitors in the space of a weekend.
If you love comics this is the place to bring your money to get all that cool stuff. T-shirts, and bobble-heads, posters, swords, axes, shields, comics. It was, of course, all there and my super-kid had an easy time dropping some cash. Strangely, Captain America was looking for a hammer rather than a sword. And when she found Mjøllnir, Anika explained that Captain America needed a power boost: "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor".
And she did gain new powers with that hammer. With prop in hand, my quiet kid took on her superhero alter-ego. She battled Superman. She chased a child-sized wookie. And when four Spidermans came for a fight, Anika karate-chopped her way to victory. Today Captain America had a lot of fun taking on the good guys for a change!
Highlight of Comic Con was a little insight into the behind-the-scenes world of Captain Canuk. My Captain America took a break from superhero fights to check out the most Canadian of superheros. Coolest thing for my fangirl kid and I - first listening to Paul Amos talk about his role as the evil Mr. Gold in that distinctive Welsh accent, then to hear Mr. Gold on the web-animated series talk just like Paul Amos!
The panel didn't start out so well though. Even superheros have tech glitches and that darn Captain Canuk video had the tech guy scrambling for a while. But with some expert button fiddling, a laptop switch and a reboot Captain Canuck came up on-screen larger than life and battling aliens. But the real superhero of the day? That tech guy - he saved the day for an audience full of Captain Canuck fans!
